Introduction

Touch the Hearts of the Elderly Seniors (T.H.E.S) is a regular volunteering programme that provides opportunities for volunteers to befriend elderly who live in one-room rental flats in Geylang Bahru. Volunteers' Thoughts

  • By Calista, Publicity Head

“Volunteering with T.H.E.Seniors was my first experience with an institution-based regular volunteering programme. I was highly apprehensive due to my lack of exposure to volunteering and CSC in itself, however, the volunteers were extremely welcoming and patient. There was an atypical lack of a learning curve or competitiveness as our prerogative lay with befriending the seniors – guaranteed to be a thoroughly refreshing experience for any university student. I personally enjoy exercising my dialect with the elderly as well, as any slip-ups are but another great bonding opportunity between the elderly and the volunteers. Joining the committee and aiding in planning the Mini-Celebration and Major Outing has been tiring, yet it is also undeniably rewarding to know that we are spicing up the beneficiaries’ lives – if just for a day. I find myself looking forward to each Saturday, and I hope that our (new and old) volunteers will too!”

  • By Wei Hong, Welfare Head

“When visiting the homebound elderly, they are happy to see us pop by and would treat us as if we were their grandchildren. In addition, the elderly who hang around the senior activity centre are friendly and remember us from the major outings that they had participated in.”

  • By Pei Xuan, Volunteer

“The weekly visits to the elderly’s houses provide me new experience every time, getting to know each of their stories and helping them when they require our help. Their warm welcome for every visit and updates of their life are what I look forward to and received greatly for every visit.”

  • By Justin, Volunteer

“What I feel throughout the different visits is that everyone is friendly, both the elderly and fellow volunteers. Each visit has been quite enjoyable. I like that there is a good vibe within THES, whereby there are no strict rules that us volunteers have to abide by. Luckily for me, I had the opportunity to interact each all of the elderly within THES thus far, and it has been quite a good experience so far 😊”

  • By Shu Fen, Internal Chairperson

“It was my first time volunteering in the elderly sector with T.H.E.Seniors and it has proven to be an unforgettable experience as I see the seniors smiling so brightly whenever we visit them on our regular Saturday visits. On top of that, the Major Outings and Mini Celebrations have once again created a great bonding opportunity for both the seniors and volunteers. My experience with T.H.E.S has so far been a really great one and I am excited to see more new volunteers joining our big family!”
